The 2012 Next Gen Gaming Handheld

With the Iphone and Android app store games becoming more and more popular, it seems the originators of the handheld gaming market need to step up and find a niche that appeals more to the hardcore video gamer. Over the last few years, the handheld gaming market has taken a strange turn. Gaming companies, such as Nintendo and Sony, are losing the battle to companies, such as Apple and Android. Strange indeed, but not without good reason.

The app store games have an addictive pizzazz about them. They possess convenience, customization, and interaction. With that being said, they aren't without fault. They lack story, emotion, and tangible buttons. Have you tried playing Mortal Kombat on the Iphone? We all know, the app store games are a great time killer at the DMV or while at a wedding, but they shouldn't be the only option. Now for the point of this article.

The PS Vita. Sony has finally decided to release a sequel to its slightly underrated PS Portable. During its heyday, it was actually a very impressive system and through modification became one of the coolest/entertaining handheld gadgets. This time though, Sony is really stepping it up. The PS Vita has the perks of the modern app store games (with its touch screen and Sony app store) plus also features dual analogue thumb sticks, a plethora of buttons, tilt sensors, and back touch sensors. The frame of the system is a little larger than the original, but in a good way. The added girth allows for a more comfortable grip and easy access to the new control features.

Personally, I believe the PS Vita will stand up well against the growing app market. Sony made a good move by indulging in the popularity of app games. They also made a good move continuing the efforts of creating thought provoking and story orientated titles. Sony tried to do this with the PSP Go but failed. It felt more like an upgrade than a revise.

The PS Vita comes out in the US February 22, 2012. I posted some specs and links below.

PS Vita Modding?

With the original PSP modding community still in full effect. I anticipate that the PS Vita will also have a large Mod following. I will keep everyone posted with the release on Feb. 22, 2012.
